People often use “bucket list” and “life list” to mean the same thing: experiences they hope to have during their lifetime. The difference is mostly in emphasis.
A bucket list is instantly understood. A life list feels less connected to death and can include the small, ongoing, and relational parts of living. You do not have to choose only one.
01
A Bucket List is usually outcome-focused
Bucket lists are good at making wishes concrete. Visit Iceland. Learn to dive. Write a book. Run a marathon. The clear outcome makes each idea easy to save and recognize.
The weakness is that the list can become a collection of impressive nouns rather than a guide to action. It can also overrepresent travel, money, and physical challenges.
02
A Life List can be experience-focused
A life list can include the same major goals, but it leaves more room for a way of living: host friends for dinner, learn a family recipe, spend a month without rushing weekends, help with a local cause, or become comfortable speaking in public.
These ideas may never produce a dramatic checkmark. They can still change a life.
03
Use the clarity of one and the breadth of the other
- Write each idea as a specific experience you can recognize.
- Include everyday, relational, creative, and community experiences.
- Add practical planning only when you are ready to act.
- Afterward, record what happened instead of storing only a completion state.
- Let the list change when you change.
04
The useful question is what comes next
The name of the list matters less than whether it helps you notice and choose. If you have fifty saved ideas and none feels actionable, find one real record from somebody who did it. If your list feels like an obligation, remove ideas without guilt. If it feels too grand, add something you can try close to home.
A good list should expand your sense of possibility without turning life into a progress bar.
